News 2009
Our Highlights of the Year 2009
The year 2009 has been more than full of surprises. The 2009 taught us that you can never take anything for granted!
During the past year we have had both the most amazing times of our lives
but we have also experienced the very lowest moments.
This year also really taught us to live with the moment and to enjoy every moment you with your dogs,
because you can never know what will happen next!
After Totti was first injured in blood tracking test and Patu just months after ending both the tracking and
show season very early and completely by surprise, so we concentrated mostly on healing.
Coops show season was shadowed by skin and coat problems.
We were anyway able to attend on some tests and shows both in Finland and abroad.
With these results Patu was anyway the most winning IWS in Finland during 2009!!!
Here are our highlighs of the year 2009...

21.11.2009 International Dog Show - Jyväskylä
On Saturday morning me and Arja from Kennel Chaffinch started our trip to Jyväskylä
fortunately in quite nice weather as it usually rains cats and dogs.
I promised to Arja that I would operate as KETY (kennel girl) during this trip that worked very nicely:)
Her goldens are such an angels!
Arjas' goldens did well in the show and in the end her breeders group ended up being BOB!!!
I was honoured to show one of her amazing goldens. Bertta is charming lovely girl who will do miracles in future!
Huge congratulations! We did have a great funny day!!!

24.10.2009 International Dog Show - Seinäjoki
I was happy to get visitors from Rovaniemi when family Simonen and their Tottis' lovely daughter
Catanka Innocence 'Viivi' were on their way to Seinäjoki for Saturday.
She was looking great already before our grooming session, but after she was totally smashing!
What a coat she has:)
IWSs' were judged under Lessi Chistyakova from Russia who seemingly knew what she liked.
I was really pleased about our totally new acquaintance.
Viivi took the breed with her last CC and CACIB meaning that she is now
new FINNISH SHOW CHAMPION!!!
Congratulations to whole family Simonen!!!! you really have amazing lady!!!

20.09.2009 Blood Tracking Test - Himanka
Our local dog club Keski-Pohjanmaan Koirakilta ry's Championship Test was this year organised in Himanka.
Himanka has diverse landscape varying from moss to open nature. The area is ideal for championship level tests.
Local hunting club was once again so kind to provide us their great premises for these two days.
Thanks belongs also to Seppo doing such a great job with local hunters!
Anna-Lena was so kind to borrow Fiona, mini smooth dachshund, to run with me in this test.
This was my very first time to run with a small dog in any type of test, this time meaning very small dog:)
It was also Fionas very first time to run some other person than her owner.
Fiona totally broke all my ideas and expectations that it would be somehow easier or lighter to run with small dog,
it was absolutely not!! maybe even harder! She totally showed that small lady in hard landscape can do perfect job!
Our first ran together and we took Winners Class 1st prize with 47/50 points!!!! and shared
the highest points of the whole test!!
I was really happy and honoured to tell Anna-Lena about our achievement!!!
Thank you girls!!!

06.09.2009 Blood Tracking Test - Regionals - Kruunupyy
Ostrobothnia Kennel District regional Championship test was finally organised after few years of break.
Dogs in the test are selected according to their results of past year and only 6 are qualified.
Both of my boys Totti and Patu qualified, Totti being on the top of list with amazing results of 48/50 points.
I was sad that he was not able to attend because of the accident happened beforehand and
he needed to be medically treated.
It appeared afterwards that it would have been better to leave also Patu home.
Patus track was laid on landscape in the area with large dug ditches and nothing was said beforehand.
While he was running I just saw him jumping over large one and not able to reacht otherside.
He crashed into sharp side and twisted his leg very badly!

Patu took the breed with CACIB, Manta being BOS also with CACIB. Tottis daughter was BB2.
The breed was judged by Marjo Jaakkola.

25.08.2009 Blood Tracking Test - Lohtaja
The forest of Lohtaja reveals the idea of real Finnish forest with spruces, pines and ofcourse some ditches.
In blood tracking tests tracks are made the day before the test, winners class track must be at least
18 hours old. We were making them on Monday evening that was really nice after the landscape is quite familiar.
Anyhow I thought I would knew the landscape, but once during my first track to be prepared, I arrived to
the ditch thinking it would not have water in...but it had and a lot. I was able place my other foot on the top
of the rock otherside of the ditch, but not had enough strength pull myself there too ending up on the bottom
of the ditch! The ditch was full of dirty ferrous water, so there I was middle of nowhere, sitting!
Our test went much better than making our tracks. Patu took Winners Class 1st prize with 45/50 points,
making me once again so proud of him! Our judge was our dear old friend Torsten Lerstrand.
Thank you Anu for this great day with lovely company! Next year again..

8.-09.08.2009 Blood Tracking Test - Sievi
It was once again time to attend on Finnish Otterhounds already traditional blood tracking test
weekend held in Sievi area. This year like in every other year the weather was extremely hot,
the temperature being over 25 degrees during the whole weekend. This made the test even more
challenging both dogs and handlers, maybe especially handlers:)
Our first day was placed in the area of Hietala farm close to the old church of Sievi.
Hietala farm area is totally special with amazing landscape and nature, to say nothing of
the atmosphere and all the great people managing the place. There is a legend about one of the track
called 'big-dipper'. Even we have been there for years, the draw of this track has never been pointed to us before.
So this year it was our turn to find out if the legend is true or not. I can assure you that everything said is true.
The track consist of long scarps and gullies with huge altitude differencies meaning also large
temperature differencies between top and bottom. Patu ran the track with style without even a little
hesitation of climbing or getting down the huge slopes. He gained Winner Class 1st prize with 46/50 points
under Heikki Kulo. Now I really know that also Patu can run hard track if he just wants to,
I was so proud of my little boy!!!!
The second say was organised in the area of the lake Maasydänjärvi. The landscape there is more
open and even with pine forest. This type of even and open landscape is demanding for fast large dogs,
because during very short time they are able to run long distance of the track.
Sunday was even warmer than Saturday but happily we had a little bit more of wind.
Patu ran his second track during the weekend achieving Winners Class 1st prize with 43/50 points!!
Amazing weekend for us!!! Regionals here we come:)

02.08.2009 International Dog Show - Iisalmi
Our trip to Iisalmi started early in the morning with great thunder storm and rain.
It was raining almost the whole way but once we arrived the show area, it was totally clear and calm.
What a luck we had!
IWSs were judged under Eeva Rautala.
I only had Coop with me who ended up taking the breed. It was nice to see also Tottis daughter 'Ruska'
Catanka in the Air winning her first CACIB. Congratulations!!
She is lovely girl with amazing character..

18. - 19.07.2009 International Dog Shows - Oulu
After experiences from previous year, I was not sure at all that I would want to
travel to Oulu. The weekend we spent there last year was the most wet ever with mud just everywhere.
It was just raining and raining and the whole horse tracking race was just flooding.
We were lucky enough that the weather was totally great this year and place just perfect!
Thank you sunshine!
Manta and Petra joined us on Friday to travel to show on Saturday morning.
This year there were two International Dog Shows organised during the weekend.
This meant that almost 7 000 dogs were judged in this one of the biggest show of the summer.
Rings were placed straight on horse track that left enough space for tents and people.
On Satuday morning family Utter, Marita, Carina and Hanna were already there so we were able to
just carry our things inside their tent right next to our ring, thanks for that! You know me in the morning:)
Petra otterhound was in the ring first judged under Harri Lehkonen taking BOB with CACIB.
IWSs were judged under Anca Giura from Romania. Patu took the breed and Manta was BOS both with CACIBs.
Our black lady Eve was BB-2 with reserved CACIB, Carinas and Hannas amazing Simo taking the breed.
Then we just waited and waited for the groups rings to start and finally it was time for group 8.
Group 8 was judged under kind gentleman Wim Wellens from Netherlands.
It was totally worth to wait since Patu won the group!!!!! can you believe the whole group 8!!!
I was so so so proud and totally speechless, it was so amazing moment!!!
Thank you judges and the whole group of friends cheering us beside the big ring!!! just amazing!!!

12.07.2009 National Dog Show - Kemi
We left Kokkola on Saturday to spend the day in Haukipudas with Mari
and her amazing greyhound and basset girls. You can imagine how much my boys enjoyed the company!
The favorite girl was absolutely Maris young sweet basset baby.
Thank you Mari and rest of the family taking us in your house, we just had fun!
Sunday morning we drove to Kemi to attend on national dog show.
IWSs were judged under legendary Finnish lady Ritva Raita.
Patu took the breed with amazing critique and praises that were not said for nothing
as she placed him BIG-3!!!

04. - 05.07.2009 International Dog Show - Kokkola
My home town show that is why being so extra special and great!
This is the first year the show was organised together with the local horse training and racing centre
using the centre area of the grass field of their horse race course.
The grass field was amazing, flat covered with just a right high of grass.
If show can be organised perfectly, this show was just about to be perfect!
We loved it, and thanks belongs to Kirsti, Wacklin sisters and Anki, not forgetting the boys from
our kennel district!!!
Synnouve arrived from Norway on Friday evening to help us put tents in the area.
After short while working in the area we headed back to my parents place to
have a small barbecue party!!! who does not love food.. and Norwegian brown cheese!!
On Saturday I was working as a ring secretary.
Sunday was our real show day both IWS and lagottos being judged.
IWSs were judged under Swiss totally amazing gentleman Laurent Pichard.
It was totally great to look at him judging dogs and handling many difficult breeds such kind way!
Just love how he operates! Patu took the breed and Viivi was BOS both with CACIBs.
Our group was judged under Finnish highly respected all-rounder Harri Lehkonen.
Patu was placed BIG-4! This is a real achievement that I so highly appraise!!!
I would have never even dream about it!!! and front of our home town audience!!!

20.06.2009 International Dog Show - Mid Summer Show - Rovaniemi
Friday did not look so nice according to clouds gathering menacingly on sky around Kokkola.
Me and Petra and the whole bunch of dogs; Manta & all the boys were going to travel to Rovaniemi
to spend our Mid Summer with Jouni and Virve Simonen in between attending also
to dog show held traditionally every year during the time of nightless night.
Further on north we got the better the weather changed. We were afraid of rain according to
Mid Summer weather forecast and images from the previous year thunder storm were not much encouraging.
Family Simonen owns Tottis daughter Catanka Innocence aka Viivi who we were happy to meet.
On Saturday IWSs were judged by Hans Lehtinen.
Coop was attending in the show to compete on his last CACIB to achieve his International Show Champion title.
He did not do bad at all taking the breed and his needed last CACIB making him new C.I.B.
Ladylike Viivi was BOS and gained her first CC and CACIB, totally well done from this young beauty.
Patu was best male 2 with reserv-CACIB and Manta best bitch 2 with reserv-CACIB.'
The day ended in the group ring judged under Johan Juslin making Coop finally BIG-3.
Special thanks for our great time in Rovaniemi belongs to the whole Simonen family
who were so kind to take our whole group in their house to spend this occasion!!!

13. - 14.06.2009 International & National Dog Show - Vännäs, Sweden
What is almost the worse thing that can happen to a person in a dog show trip? You leave all your show clothes at home!
This happened to me! I really thought that my bag was hanging in the van when we leaving my house.
In Sweden I noticed that it was family Utters bag looking just the same as mine, which was really still
hanging at my hall in Finland. What a nightmare!
Anyway we arrived to Vännäs, small village outside of Umeå in Sweden on Friday night when the weather was
still quite nice. I was travelling with Patu and Rosita (mini smooth dachshund Boidis Manzanilla) with
The place we stayed was totally great and near the show area.
On Saturday Patu was judged under Croatian gentleman called Korozec Darko. Patu was BOB with CACIB.
Sunday was entirely better to us in the ring even the weather was worse than on Saturday and it was pooring rain
almost the whole day. In the morning Patu was judged under Bjarne Sörensen from Norway making him BOB.
It was amazing weekend with even more amazing results!
It was totally great to see our Norwegian friends Synnove and comp. and Susanne who
was so kind to take some photos from our dogs!

06.-07.06.2009 Blood Tracking Test - Kannus
Finnish IWS Club and Finnish Otterhounds arranged already traditional tracking weekend in Kannus.
Totally 24 dogs were participating both Saturday and Sunday.
Everything else was the same, but this year the weather did not continue the traditional line
being warm, sunny and dry. On the contrary the weather was varying from sunshine to hailstrom
flavoured with rotating and cold wind.
Our weekend judges were Jouni Simonen and Juha Karlström who we warmly thank for the great weekend!
Special thanks belongs also to Karla who did her tracking judge training with us on Sunday and
all the pits persons for hard work!
This year Coop was running both days achieving Winners Class 1st prize with 40/50 points
under Jouni Simonen. The second day was too much for him and I interrupted the run.
During the first day great work under demanding conditions.

31.05.2009 National Dog Show - Mänttä
Sunday was suppose to be the warmest day of the coming summer and it totally was.
The temperature rose above + 25 degrees, but it did not bother us at all.
Our ring was happily placed inside the ice stadium and ice hockey pan
where the air was cool and fresh. In the morning hours almost too cool having summer clothes on.
We felt a little bit sorry of those having their rings outside on lovely grass fields under that sunshine.
Thank you Mänttä offering us this great place with huge rings!
Our day continued as well as it has started by Patu taking the breed and Manta being BOS.
Our breed was judged for us totally new Finnish lady called Eeva Resko who is famous about her beagles.
We were happy to get her great critiques.
The day ended with group ring judged by Leila Kärkäs placing Patu BIG-3!
Thank you Petra for all sausages and ice-creams, I owe you few:)

16. - 17.05.2009 Blood Tracking Tests - Himanka
After our club show Manta travelled to Kokkola to spend quality time with my boys
in between running few blood tracking exercises to prepare for the coming weekend.
We trained for the blood tracking tests that were held in Himanka organised by
our local dog club Keski-Pohjanmaan Koirakilta ry. Himanka is an ideal place to organise
any type of test needing variable landscape from moss to pine forest.
Our first day started with sunshine and rotating wind leaving the whole landscape
extremely dry and dusty giving us totally hard conditions.
Manta started her test running in Open Class doing such a great job with lovely speed
achieving 1st prize with 46/50 points. During the same day Totti gained Winners Class
1st prize with 48/50 points. Our judge was our old acquaintance Heikki Kulo.
The second day started with even warmer temperature and lighter wind making the test really hard
for both the people and dogs. Despite of the conditions we got extermely good results.
Manta achieved her second 1st prize result in Open Class with 48/50 points granting her
to move straight to Winners Class in one weekend! Also Totti continued his amazing running
achieving once again 1st prize in Winners Class with 46/50 points. Our judge was Jarmo Kankaanpää.
in between running few blood tracking exercises to prepare for the coming weekend.

09.05.2009 Club Show - Laitikkala
IWS Club Show was this year held at Ronnvik Wineyard in the village called Laitikkala.
The place itself was totally beautiful, but the show ground and especially the surface
containing tiles rounded with moss was not so pleasing
and caused unleast 2 black knees (read that I fell) and some poor movements of dogs.
It did not help that it was raining almost the whole day, for the very first time ever!
In the rain 32 IWSs were judged under Christine Attwood from kennel Doonbeg.
Finally I am able to say that my dream came true, literally.
I told Petra before the club show that I had a dream where Manta was totally highly placed in our club show.
And she did, she took BOS showing with style during the whole long day.
You can not imagine that there were unleast 2 totally happy ladies!!! We were so so proud of her!!!
Patu was placed best male 3.

01.05.2009 Blood Tracking Test - Lohtaja
First I have to say that this test must have been really the best organised test I have ever attended!
Thank you Toni and others for this lovely day, you gave a lots of good tips and tricks.
The test was organised by Lohtaja Hunting Club using their totally amazing landscape
and hunting cabin (if you can call that huge log castle as cabin).
During the test day we totally had our first summer day with full sunshine and warm summer breeze
that made the first test of the year even more hard both people and dogs.
Our condition is not the best shape after the long winter...
The landscape in Lohtaja is ideal with spruce and pine forests covered with low ground vegetation
and few ditches and moss areas.
Our judge was Juha Junkala (kennel Jay Jay's) finally really judging us as he is usually
competing with his own dogs in same tests as we do, so we are typically use to see him as track guide.
Therefore this was not the first time for him seeing Totti running,
but he liked it this time too giving Totti Winners Class 1st prize and 46/50 points!!
Surely Totti did totally great job!! I am always so proud of him!

26.04.2009 International Dog Show - Vaasa
After our great day of Lahti international dog show me and Synnove continued to Vaasa
to attend on another International Dog Show. When we were able to leave Lahti it was already quite late
and we noticed that all the hotels in Vaasa were fully booked.
Our first plan was to drive to Kokkola and in the morning back to Vaasa.. bad plan..
so we called to my fathers sister who kindly promised us to stay the night in their lovely house.
We were so totally thankful of the offer!
We all had also a great day in Vaasa!
Synnove got her another new International, Nordic and Finnish Champion! Congratulations again!!!
Patu took the breed under Tatjana Urek from Slovenia and was placed 2nd in the group!!!!!!

26.04.2009 International Dog Show - Lahti
Me and Patu started our quality time trip on Friday by paying a visit on
Ramboll environmental laboratory in Luopioinen where we also met one of my dearest friends Merja.
I am sure that I was more interested in the real laboratory than Patu was:)
We were happy to stay the night in Merjas totally amazing house located on the ridge area by the lake.
Thank you Merja and the whole family of everything! We had great time, luckyly the lake was still frozen.
On Saturday we traveled to Lahti where we first met Synnove almost sleeping in her car after driving from
Norway the whole night. Poor her:)
Her lagottos were in the ring in the morning and she got what she needed another C.I.B, Nordic and Finnish Champion.
Job well done after huge distance of travelling!
IWSs were suppose to be judged under one of the most respected IWS judge Rune Fagerström,
but sadly the judge was changed and we got Paavo Mattila. Many of us have been long waiting Rune to judge our dogs!
This was not so bad after all since Manta took well earnedly the breed!!!
She was again such lovely and beautiful girl.. and getting better and better all the time.
I have to say again that I was so so proud of her! Petra is doing such great job keeping him in good condition in all ways.
Patu was not showing his best because of the small ring sizes and crowds with their dogs sitting inside the ring area.
But I was happy that he ended up being best male 2 with CACIB.
We had a great day! I could not be happier!!!
Thank you all of the great day in Lahti!

18. - 19.04.2009 International Dog Show - Hartstad, Norway
Our trip to Hartstad Norway started with lovely weather which was extremely important
especially the total distance between Kokkola and Hartstad is about 1 000 km.
Me and Petra were attending on International Dog Show held in this
beautiful mountain city the real show arena being placed on the top of the highest peak.
When we arrived the show arena early in the morning it was totally covered with show.
The agility ring was supposed to be on a football ground that was also full of show.
During the morning hours they cleaned the whole area and few hours later the ground
was totally green. This is the first time I have seen agility being runned in the middle of show drifts.
IWS were judged on Sunday under Australian great lady Heliane Maissen-Jarisch.
She totally loved Manta placing her BOB with CACIB and giving her the most beautiful critique.
Manta also gained her Norwegian CC that made her Nordic and Norwegian Show Champion.
She totally looked great! I was once again so proud of showing her!
After this long and hard trip she was still showing herself with the full power and fun!

So our trip went well until we had to start our way back home at noon of Sunday.
The weather was horrible with extremely hard wind and some light snowing as they said in the local weather report.
When we were supposed to leave they told us that the main brindge from the island Harstad is located is closed.
We left anyway and were able to pass the bridge with luck.
Unfortunately this did not bring us very far as we arrived the main mountain road towards Sweden, the whole road
was closed and we were told that it has been closed since 12. So what else can we do than wait...
... and wait... and wait.. more than 6 hours... after finally we were able to move on throught the road with only one lane..
Proceeding with totally low speed arounded this mountain storm we were able to arrive the border of
Norway and Sweden where we were stopped once again.. so we waited again..
This time only little bit more than 2 hours after we were able to follow the ploughing car in huge long queue.
This was an experience that we have never faced before, but we managed it rather well.
So after 21 hours we arrived home on Monday morning with great sunshine.

30.03.2009 Middle Ostrobothnia Kennel District - The Show Dog of the Year 2008
Middle Ostrobothnia Kennel Distric had their Annual General Meeting where they
rewarded the best dogs in several categories.
Coop was awarded as the Show Dog of the Year 2008.
I think this is quite huge, because our Kennel District is large
and several famous breeders are living in it.
